Anaesthetics Fundamentals of Anaesthetic Care

The module is exclusively designed for students with a theatre nursing background, providing a foundation in anaesthetic theory and practice. It enables students to acquire essential competencies and a deeper understanding of contemporary concepts that can be applied in clinical practice. This is the first of two modules (PCPH3017 + PCPH3018) that will lead to the acquisition of a PgCert and the accompanying competencies required to practice clinically, as stipulated by the Association of Anaesthetists.

Students will need to pass clinical competencies during placement and academic assessment to underpin their understanding of applied theory. Placements will cover specialties within their base hospitals and are required across two semesters to include vascular/major surgery, emergency/trauma, obstetric theatres and shared airway

This module will consider the principles of anaesthesia, anatomy and physiology related to airway, respiratory, cardiac and associated clinical considerations, patient pathway assessment including vital signs, pain, professional issues and accountability, human factors, management and safety.

Academia will be supported through online teaching, on-campus workshops/simulation opportunities and self-directed learning. This allows students flexibility in their learning whilst still having the opportunity to network as a cohort and engage with university facilities and support offerings.

Learning outcomes

• Critically explore the role of the assistant to the anaesthetist
• Critically examine the value of anaesthetic care based on credible evidence, demonstrated through the core anaesthetic competencies
• Investigate comprehensive pharmaceutical information of drugs relevant to the anaesthetic process, informing safe and confident practice
• Critically explore knowledge of applied anatomy and physiology in relation to care of the anaesthetised patient
• Critically review the role and practice of clinical assessment in anaesthetic care
• Critically explore the advances such as Human Factors and Non-technical Skills within anaesthesia and investigate the impact upon anaesthetic care and services

Entry criteria

• Effective registration with the NMC / HCPC or other relevant professional body
• Successful level 4/5 academic study
• Current employment with managerial support for undertaking the module
• Minimum 12 months post-registration experience, within a perioperative practice setting.
• Agreed perioperative placement opportunities with practice sponsor that can meet anaesthetic competencies required (Core Competency Framework for Anaesthetic Assistants, NHS Education for Scotland)
• IELTS 6.5 in all criteria
