ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ Widening access and participation / Experience Day

Craft the perfect day for your students to learn about university and take part in some hands-on activities to develop their skills. We have a range to choose from to create a bespoke experience just for you!

All of our experience days will include a tour of the ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ campus and a lunch break. See below some example schedules of the day.

Academic Taster Session

Duration: 60 minutes

These subject taster sessions are led by ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ academics to give students a sense of what they can do and learn at university. Have a particular subject in mind? Let us know.

For Year 9, Year 10, Year 11

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise the variety of subjects areas to choose from at university level
  • Gain first hand experience of what it’s like to be taught at university

Budgeting Activity

Duration: 60 minutes

This activity will get students thinking about how they should spend their money at university and gives them greater confidence about managing their money in the future. It pairs well with the In-Depth Student Finance Talk.

For Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise that university is affordable for everyone
  • Demonstrate effective money management skills

Design a Society

Duration: 60 minutes

This creative activity focuses on the extra curricular side of university. Students will work together in groups to design their own society or club, then present and pitch their idea back to the class. This and the Design a University activity are quite similar.

For Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate effective team work, creativity and presentation skills
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of extracurricular opportunities at university

Design a University

Duration: 60 minutes

With knowledge of what universities are and what they can offer, students will be tasked to work together in groups to design their own university, then present and pitch their idea back to the class. This and the Design a Society activity are quite similar.

For Year 6, Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate effective team work, creativity and presentation skills
  • Develop an understanding of the different parts of university and what they do

ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ Detectives

Duration: 75 minutes

A fun and practical skills session that encourages learners to solve mysteries and explore skills such as problem solving, memory, communication and team-work.

For Year 8, Year 9, Year 10

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate confidence in a variety of skills needed for university and school life

ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥â€™s Den

Duration: 90 minutes

A innovative skills session for learners to explore subjects related to Business. This activity will help learners to use communication skills, team-work skills, creativity and many more.

For Year 9, Year 10

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate confidence in a variety of skills needed for university and school life

I Disagree

Duration: 75 minutes

This challenging classroom debate activity will enhance students’ communication and critical thinking skills, as well as their ability to work in a team. There are a range of topics to choose from for the activity too.

For Year 6, Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10

  • Demonstrate confidence in a variety of skills needed for university and school life

In-depth Student Finance Talk

Duration: 30 minutes

This short presentation gives students the facts about the costs of higher education, debunking myths about student loans and repayments. This talk pairs well with the Budgeting Activity.

For Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11

Learning outcomes

  • Identify how students fund going to university
  • Debunk the common myths about finance at university

Mini Visual CV

Duration: 90 minutes

This is a shortened version of the Visual CV activity but still gets students to examine their skills and abilities in order to help them consider their future options and goals.

For Year 8, Year 9, Year 10

Learning outcomes

  • Identify skills and qualities and determine what courses and careers require them
  • Ability to make informed decisions about their future

Revision & Study Skills Workshop

Duration: 60 minutes

This interactive workshop provides students with the knowledge and confidence to make actionable revision and study plans.

For Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11

Learning outcomes

  • Identify various study techniques
  • Demonstrate greater confidence in revision
  • Begin to plan a revision timetable and routine

Spaghetti Towers

Duration: 60 minutes

This classic activity will get students working together to create a tall tower out of limited resources.

For Year 6, Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate effective team work, communication and problem solving skills

Student Life Talk

Duration: 30 minutes

It’s all very well hearing our wonderful staff members talk about university, but we feel that your learners will relate far better to our current students. Our students are eager to offer advice and support, as well as talk about their own day to day experiences at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥. (Student ambassadors from specific subjects can be requested)

For Year 5, Year 6, Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11, Year 12

  • Identify what life is like for university students
  • Recognise what is required to go to university

Study Skills Talk

Duration: 30 minutes

This talk gives students tips for revision, including how to revise effectively and how to create a revision timetable.
