Personal profile

Dr. Indrani Lahiri, Senior Lecturer in Media & Communication. She holds an Associate Fellowship with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London. She is the Fellow of Royal Society of Arts. She is Senior Fellow of HEA and an Academic Consultant in public relations. She is interested in developing interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary research projects within the university, nationally and internationally.

Her research focuses on digital media, society and politics.  Her research interests include pressing questions in contemporary media studies, digital society, socio-political concerns, political communication, public relations, diversity, inclusion, race, media culture, media effects, media technologies, big data, postcolonialism, globalisation, political economy and social developmental policies (to mention a few). Her experience of working in the social media has provided me excellent opportunity to learn and gather knowledge on the research methods and skills to communicate effectively and efficiently in the social media to impart impact. Her engagement with the social media innovation has contributed to further research collaboration internationally. Apart from these she has special interest in the media pedagogies.

Her recent publication is on “Constructive alignment and multimodal approaches – Innovative media pedagogies in public relations”, International Journal of Development Research, 8, (06), 21271-21278.

Indrani Lahiri has worked on developing projects on social media and brand communication as a Brand Communication and Research Manager. This project aimed at developing a strong relationship between the industry and academia. She undertook extensive market research and led brand awareness and campaigns based on academic research. One of the important roles that she had to undertake as part of this project was developing promotional and campaign materials (both visual and print) for both internal and external stakeholders as a part of developing strong integrated professional relationships. This had impacted on the engagement of the audience both within and inside the organisation and involved the identification of problems related to campaign material, communication and engagement.

She encourages postgraduate research and welcomes research proposal from prospective students who want to pursue doctoral study. Students can email research proposals directly to her address.

She has an incessant interest in international research and teaching collaboration. Currently, she is working on developing a global network of academics to address broader global issues in digital society, media and politics.

She is keen to develop community engagement projects to expand her research reach. Recently she has started working on UN Sustainable Development Goals and exploring ways to embed it in the curriculum. She is particularly interested in research led teaching and is passionate about working with students as co-producers and co-creators.

Research Profile

Her doctoral thesis looks into the relationship between the between the media and the Left Front Government (LFG) in the provincial state of West Bengal in India between 1977 and 2011.

Indrani completed her PhD (awarded without corrections) at the University of Stirling. She was a Charles Wallace Trust Scholar, whose work provides a link between Media Studies and International/Global research, encouraging collaboration between scholarly endeavour and pedagogy. At the University of Stirling she taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contributed to postgraduate supervision. She has delivered a postgraduate student mentoring programme, providing support and guidance, and also continues to work closely with the migration network (GRAMNET) at the University of Glasgow.

Her research interests include pressing questions in contemporary media studies, socio-political concerns, political communication, media culture, media effects, media economies, media technologies, postcolonialism, globalization, European politics, political economy and social developmental policies (to mention a few). Apart from these she has special interest in the relation between the social media and political deliberation in the public sphere. Her experience of working in the social media has provided me excellent opportunity to learn and gather knowledge on the research methods and skills to communicate effectively and efficiently in the social media to impart impact. Her engagement with the social media innovation has contributed to further research collaboration internationally.
