Personal profile

Dr Hiu Man Chan sepcialises in international collaboration in the creative and cultural industries, particularly the film sector.

In parallel to her teaching and research, she has been an active practitioner involving in a wide range of projects with over 15 years of industry experience. These include co-production film development, film distribution and exhibition, film festival, film related IP concept design and creative enetprise development. 

Hiu Man's teaching style is engaging. She regularly brings her own experience from the industry into teaching. At the same time, she encourages students to develop their own critical thinking with a forward looking and entrepreneurial attitude. She believes in empowering students and is committed to helping each individual student to actualise their own potentials.  

Hiu Man's research style is dynamic, collaborative, proactive and solutions-driven. She believes in the democratisation of knowledge and is passionate about knowledge exchange. She is active in disseminating her research and testifying her ideas in different creative ways. She is a regular media commentator and public debate curator. Her public-facing articles have been published by international media such as The Conversation, The Diplomat, World Economic Forum, South China Morning Post, CGTN and many more. 

Originally from Hong Kong SAR, Hiu Man has an intensive industry network in the creative industries across Greater China and ASEAN. In the UK, her research, knowledge exchange and advocacy have gained attention from stakeholders such as DCMS, Department for International Trade, British Council, the British Film Institute and local city councils.

Research interests/expertise

Hiu Man's current research interests focus on the following topis: 

  • UK film industry’s internationalisation beyond Hollywood and Europe. It particularly investigates and orchestrates opportunities in new rising markets, such as China. 
  • Chinese cinema culture, film industry and its internationalisation, particularly around international collaboration with the UK, EU, the Middle East and Africa. 
  • International co-production films with China
  • The future of Hong Kong’s film industry
  • Film and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
  • Film diplomacy as conflict mediator and peacebulding

Her other interests include contextual and historical research which support above themes, soft power, cultural policy, film and international relations, film (criticism) as journalism as well as a long-life philosophical thinking about "Imagination and Institution".

Dr Chan welcomes potential PhD project enquiries that are related to topics above.
