Stonewall has praised ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥, saying it sends out a ‘powerful message to trans communities that they are welcome and accepted’ and has called for others to follow the university’s lead.

Robbie de Santos, Head of Communications and Campaigns, Stonewall, said: “We’re proud to see ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ Leicester ‘come out’ for trans equality today.

“If we want to live in a world where every trans person can be themselves, we need more organisations to follow ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥’s lead in using their voice to create more inclusive communities.”

Chris Hall, Head of Diversity and Equality said: “We fundamentally support the rights of transgender staff and students.

“Our  trans policy at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ very clearly says we respect the rights of trans, non binary and gender fluid people and we will support trans people in living the life which they want to live.

“We support all our staff and students and say ‘as a trans person or a person with a trans background you would be very welcome to come to ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ to work or study’.

“We have the commitment to provide a safe place to work and study regardless of your identity and that is something ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ is very firm upon,” he continued.

More than 100 companies have joined the campaign with ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥, including Disney, Microsoft, Aviva and Sky.

Stonewall was founded in 1989 to break down barriers to equality, working to create a world where every person can be accepted, without exception.
